About This Place

Mary's Cafe, nestled in the heart of Strawn, TX, is a cherished Southern restaurant that offers an authentic taste of West Texas comfort food served with genuine Southern hospitality. This unassuming spot at 119 Grant Ave feels like a home away from home, where time slows down just enough for you to savor every bite of their hearty, made-to-order dishes.

At the core of Mary's Cafe is their legendary Chicken Fried Steak, a dish that has garnered loyal fans from near and far. Whether you opt for the classic large Chicken Fried Steak with a generous helping of creamy mashed potatoes topped with rich white gravy, or explore variations like the Chicken Fried Steak Stuffed Baked Potato—oozing with flavor—each plate arrives steaming hot and crafted with care. The Chicken Fried Chicken offers a similar indulgence, crispy, golden, and perfectly seasoned.

For those who crave variety, the menu shines with Southern staples and Texan twists: the Burger Deluxe Cheeseburger — sizable enough to share — packs layers of juicy, flavorful beef, while adventurous eaters can enjoy crispy Frog Legs or the uniquely local Calf Fries. On the side, the fresh-cut French fries, blooming onion, fried okra, and onion rings complement meals with satisfying crunch and savory notes.

Vegetable sides like green beans and corn on the cob meld seamlessly with comforting dishes such as the two cheese enchiladas served with rice and beans, adding a vibrant depth to your meal. For an added kick, diners can customize their plates with grilled jalapeños, fresh jalapeños, sautéed mushrooms, or a bowl of house-made queso that perfectly balances creamy and spicy.

Mary’s isn't just about portion size—although their generous servings are famously hearty—it's about an unpretentious, warm dining atmosphere where the staff greets you like family and ensures you’re taken care of with genuine smiles and attentive service. As Dakota Moncrief so aptly put it, this "hole in the wall" exudes West Texas hospitality that invites you to relax, linger, and enjoy the moment.

The small-town charm means you might find yourself savoring your meal amidst weekend rushes or a quiet Tuesday afternoon, but no matter when you visit, the consistency in service and quality remains. Mark Coulter’s account of arriving before opening just to get a taste of this place speaks volumes about the draw Mary's Cafe has—even for those traveling two hours just to dine here.

For those with a lighter appetite, the Butterfued Blackened Chicken Breast and Grilled Chicken Breast offer balanced, flavorful alternatives that maintain that classic Southern comfort without overwhelming heaviness. And if you save room for dessert, their pies—priced at $20—promise a sweet finish to your meal, true to that old-fashioned taste of home.

While some longtime diners, like Benny de la Vega, have noticed subtle shifts in the preparation over time, the overall experience remains a staple of the community, supported by top-notch service and a welcoming vibe that makes every visit memorable. Landon Moore’s praise for the food quantity and quality highlights the excellent value here—the kind of feast that satisfies both hunger and soul without compromise.

Whether you’re a local or just passing through Strawn, Mary's Cafe is a must-visit for anyone looking to dive deep into savory Southern flavors, generous portions, and a dining experience wrapped in sincere Texan hospitality. This iconic eatery invites you to slow down, savor boldly flavored classics, and leave with a full belly and a warm heart.

This legendary "hole-in-the-wall" is a pure slice of West Texas hospitality. Whether you show up during a weekend rush or on a lazy Tuesday afternoon, you are sure to be greated like family. Time moves slower at Mary's, so if you're in a hurry, this isn't your jam. The food will be made to order, cooked fresh, and served with all the fixins. The regular cheeseburger is big enough to feed four. The chicken fried steak (CFS) is huge. A small is actually regular sized. Do NOT order a large unless you know what you're getting into. There will be delicious leftovers no matter what. My preferred order is the Downtown Danny Brown. Two delicious cheesy enchiladas, a small fried steak, chips and salsa, boracho beans, toast, and a side salad. The prices may initially seem steep, but when you consider the service and the serving size, it's a steal. This place is a nostalgic gem. Pull up a chair, relax, enjoy some real food, strike up a conversation, and leave happy. If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.

Home cooked, stick to your ribs food with great portions and great service at a fair price. We arrive before opening and sat in the lot with others waiting for the doors to open. Greeted with a great Texas welcome! Staff is absolutely amazing. We were hunting a lease in the area and came in a recommendation. We live 2 hours away, we'll be back! Get the chicken fried steak!

World Famous Chicken Fried Steak! We've heard it so many times we had to check it out for ourselves. Turns out the sides are oretty tasty too. Bonus: you can get CFS in three sizes, stuffed in a baked potato, on a sandwich, or served with enchiladas. It's a tiny place, but there's plenty of seating.

Small town eatery known for massive chicken fried steaks and burgers. The CFS used to be amazing but somehow has declined in taste over the last two times I’ve tried it (new cook or change in cooking style perhaps?). The locals still love it, so maybe it’s my taste buds, again not sure. The service is always A+. Price was $30+ for lunch + a soda. Covered bike parking nearby is a plus.

Definitely worth a stop (or a special trip). Fantastic chicken fried steak, gravy and french fries. I do not know why some other people in the reviews are talking about it being expensive when you account for how much you get. If anything they undersell the amount of food. The large is $32 for the equivalent of about two regular chicken fried steaks, a bowl of gravy and a plate of french fries. The quantity is matched with suburb quality. The steak is tender enough to easily cut with a fork. The chips and salsa are also surprisingly excellent. One of, if not the best chicken fried steak I have ever had.

Everything you’ve heard about this place true …the chicken fried steak is wonderful, the mash potatoes…and the gravy!!!! My wife got a baked potato, she said it was but the cheese was cheap. I will be back to try more of the menu!

This is the epitome of a small town gem of a restaurant serving up great tasting homestyle food, big portions, and doing so with great, friendly service! The chicken fried steak is no joke. It's almost more like a giant milanesa, but better. I got the medium, and it was probably one of the largest I've ever had. It's one of the tastiest, too! The meat was sooooo tender, I just needed my fork, and the fries were hot and crispy hand-cut fries. You could tell the gravy was homemade and not out of some packet! My wife's shrimp were delicious and my daughters "tenders" were huge and tasty. Our server was great and Mary (I'm pretty sure) was walking around checking on all the tables and directing the staff like a conductor at a symphony! We definitely want to come back, even if it's 4 hours away! Make time to go out of your way to stop here when you're in the area!

First off the staff were amazing, food amazing and well worth the 2.5 hour drive to try Mary's. Best blooming onion I've ever had. Cam for the chicken fried steak and it didn't disappoint.
